Old Museum of Music Automatons
Old Museum of Music Automatons

The Museum of Music Automatons, Seewen, Solothurn owes its existence to the passionate collector Dr. h.c. Heinrich Weiss who, over a period of decades, lovingly assembled a comprehensive collection of Swiss music boxes, disc music boxes, automatons, musical timepieces and large mechanical automatons which has now become world-famous.

The collection was opened up to the public in 1979 with the creation of a private museum that was gifted to the Swiss Confederation in 1990. A spacious new building that doubled the amount of exhibition space available and meets the needs of a modern museum was completed in 2000. The museum now includes a reception area with a foyer, a restaurant with a terrace offering views of the countryside, an additional exhibition room and a shop.

Directed by Dr. Christoph E. Hänggi, the museum comprises both an attractive permanent exhibition and numerous exciting special exhibitions on mechanical music and timepieces, and is drawing ever increasing numbers of visitors.
